Curb-side Pickup Shelter

Ensuring schoolchildren are protected from the elements while waiting for their parents to pick them up is an important concern for any school. The prefab aluminum car covers from Japan are a perfect solution.

Adding two cantilever carports with posts sharing a footing creates a winged carport. In the picture above, you can see three of these winged ports in a row. To build this large cover, six separate carport units were combined into one big structure, spanning about 20 feet wide and 50 feet deep.

Set-back Solution

Japanese style carports for a single car generally have post only on one side. This creates a cantilevered roof. Just like the eaves of a house the cantilevered edge can reach further towards the property line than a wall or post could. In most US States you will be able to cover your car up to 2.5’ towards the side property line.

Cantilever Carport + Anchors

Adding a third post to a PJR cantilever carport gives us the option of a deeper projection of 11 feet. The third post also works in supporting higher snow loads. Take a look at the hurricane anchors featured in this project. They sit nicely tucked away at the posts and are easily set up when needed.

This is a genuine Japanese carport with polycarbonate roof panels. This particular panel type is called the Blue Smoke and is the best heat-cutting roof panel available on the market. It cuts out a whopping 83% of heat. Take a look at the huge shade it provides for the car.

4 PJW Carports Combined

A Pre-fabricated DYI carport system can cover large parking areas. This project shows a four car cover created with two double ports in tandem and side-by-side. Specific connectors and flashings are provided to make sure the whole structure is rain tight. See image number five for a closer look at one of those connections.

For expanded width, you can connect one carport unit to the next side-by-side with specific connection profiles that ensure no rainwater reaches below the canopies.

Best Cantilever Carport

This is the standard PJR cantilever carport. This project shows all the main parts beautifully, like the heat cut panel, and also the optional hurricane anchors. Posts are only on one side and out of the way. PJR 50.30

Being able to cover a car with posts only on one side has many advantages. Fewer posts mean fewer obstructions and footings. A cantilever port can also be very helpful when there are setback issues when parking close to a property line. In most US states, the setback to a post from the side property line is 5 feet; however, a roof edge or eave can extend as far as 2 1/2 feet to the property line. Here is a good example of a cantilever port going to the max of setback.

Another advantage is that a cantilevered port can extend over or under an existing roof to protect the space next to the home. Here some examples: Entry Cover Port, Car cover next to the house.

3 Car Carport

The PJ aluminum carport can cover three cars. This modern car cover in color silver (SLC) shows off the Blue Smoke heat-cut roof panels in the hot sun. It provides rain and heat protection for your car. PJR 57.80 Triple Carport

There are seven modern Japanese aluminum profile ports that can cover three cars side-by-side, available to US customers. The triple carport featured in this post is from the PJ carport series.

Pre-fabricated Japanese carports are made of aluminum profiles. Because of the manufacturing process, which involves anodization, any individual aluminum profile has a maximum length of about 19 feet. If a carport wants to stretch across further than that, a heavy-duty connection has to be created to safely connect two profiles into a longer bearing beam. The standard triple carports have a maximum width of 26 1/2 feet.

Specialty luxury ports like the U-Style carport system can employ bearing beams, reaching across for almost 40 feet.

Custom Side-Profiles

Aluminum profiles have been installed on one side of this double carport to create sunshade with a lot of ventilation.

This PJW double carport installed in Texas is among the first installations in the United States to feature the new black polycarbonate roof panel. Unlike other translucent polycarbonate roof panels, this black panel does not allow any light to pass through.

This type of roof panel is especially useful when there are big trees over the carport roof that constantly drop leaves and debris.

Cover for 2 Cars In-Tandem

The modern aluminum carports from Japan can connect seamlessly to one another to create deep covered car parking spaces. As a pre-fabricated system, a carport’s depth can be literally unlimited. Because the posts are only on one side, this carport canopy can hover over the low roof without touching the ceramic tile of the house roof.

De-mountable Winged Carport

When property setback regulations prohibit a post close to the property line a winged carport with posts only in the middle can help. And if the cantilever option is still not enough, you can build a removable carport. This installation shows such an option. Stiffeners inside the posts are lag-bolted to the post profiles (sleeved) so this carport can be removed from its footings if needed.

This bicycle shelter on the side of a condominium is a PJR cantilever carport from Japan. With the posts only on the back end, the front side is open for the bicycles to freely move in and out of the bicycle stand, which was also fabricated in Japan.

The function of this large aluminum carport gazebo is to keep mourners protected during committal ceremonies at this military cemetery. Without darkening the space, the blue smoke heat cut polycarbonate panels cuts out 83% of the heat rays and 100% of UV rays.
